The Story

Fournier said we were on track to reopen. Now, we’re not so sure.

Let’s rewind.

Last Monday, the school board met to talk about a variety of things, with the criteria for reopening being the most major. Push comes to shove, we watched it so you don’t have to, and basically Mr. Fournier said that we’re essentially on track to go to the next phase. There’s only one teeny tiny problem: the metrics.

What are the metrics?

The metrics are a list of graphs and data points that show how many coronavirus cases New Hampshire has, as well as the number of hospitalizations, new cases, yeah yeah, you get the idea. And uh oh, these numbers have kind of skyrocketed in the past several days. As of last Monday, we had 18 new cases in Bedford. Obviously, now it’s a lot more.

How many cases do we have now?

Within the Bedford school district, we have 4 students and 3 staff members who have contracted the virus, which the most recent one announced just a few days ago. However, last Thursday, a new outbreak of 47 cases in Bedford was announced, centering around the Bedford Hills Center. For those who don’t know, that’s the long term care facility.

What does this mean for us?

Well, if Fournier was concerned about 18 new cases in Bedford, he’s got a much bigger headache coming. 47 new cases is not going to be taken lightly, and this could definitely push back the timeline for moving on to the next phase of reopening.

What is the timeline, anyway?

On Monday, Fournier said he was “aiming for” K-8 to move to Phase 1A on October 16th, and the high school on October 21st. But he also explicitly stated that those dates were not an official recommendation, and that he was not comfortable giving a specific order due to the increase of cases in the town. Now that things have changed even more, we don’t actually know what he’s thinking anymore, but our guess is that’s not going to happen. Sorry, we’re the news, not mind readers.

The Runaway

Get comfortable with that new schedule of ours, because it seems like it won’t be changing for a while.

What to Say…

When you’re trying to keep up with every sport starting at the same time…

We got you covered. Right off the bat (or the tee??? We’re sorry), golf is off to a good start with a 3-1 record. They have one match left vs. BG on Tuesday before possible playoffs. We don’t know if they’re guaranteed a spot at playoffs as of right now, but we know you’re all rooting for them. After a loss in their first game against Goffstown, the field hockey team has won the last three games in a row. Flex. The boys’ soccer team closed out the week with a decisive victory over BG on Saturday, and volleyball won their last home game against Central 3-0. Their next home game is on Wednesday against Memorial. And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for: football finally dominated over Central last Friday. Their next game is away, against the defending state champs, Londonderry. Sad, we know, but it’s not like we can go to home games either.

When we’re talking about sports already…

Jozokos might actually pull through for the seniors! On Wednesday, in an email to the class of 2021, Mr. Jozokos said that because of a group of seniors who talked to him about wanting to attend sports games, they are “working on a way to make that happen.” There hasn’t been any major progress in figuring this out yet, but it’s at least in the works. Those poor seniors. Even we feel sort of bad for them, and we don’t really have souls. We’re the news, remember?
