The Story
We got some more juicy covid drama going down on Facebook.
Some background?
As many of you know, Bedford has a handful of people with… let’s just say interesting views on many topics. Although they are generally ignored, comments in a recent thread on one of the many Facebook groups over the past few days crossed a line.
So what happened?
On this thread, a pediatric cardiologist posted about the covid related deaths in the 5-11 age group. The response to this post was initially positive, but the comments section soon turned into a WWE wrestling match.
What did they say??
Some people were suggesting that the vaccine was equivalent to “Russian roulette”, and that it had proven to be ineffective in stopping the disease, as well as the disproven claim that the vaccine has caused widespread heart inflammation in kids. Pretty standard conspiracy stuff.
What else?
This conspiracy stuff is not what caused the concern. A member of this group, who had been arguing with the cardiologist, said that he had been directing people how to get Ivermectin, a drug that people claim treats covid, but use is discouraged by the FDA. You know it’s a bad idea when it’s discouraged by the FDA.
What about the medical consequences?
We at the Runaway Bulldog are not doctors, but it seems like common sense that you shouldn’t use a drug used to treat lice for COVID. This drug does have value (and received a Nobel prize) for its help around the world, but the Facebook commenter was directing people on how to receive this drug that they were not prescribed. According to the cardiologist, it could cause cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) if not taken correctly. Yikes.
And the legal consequences?
We don’t know the details, but telling people to take drugs not meant for them could be potentially legally dubious. This person’s actions surprised many people, and raised concerns about possible health problems stemming from the wrongful use of this drug. Don’t do drugs kids! Especially random lice-killing drugs from Facebook.
The Runaway
Seeking alternative methods to treat COVID is still not the greatest idea. Also still don’t drink bleach or stick a flashlight up your butt.
What to Say…
When you’re over classroom learning…
Intersession is back this year! And the intersession catalogue is officially open for viewing! Intersession is an opportunity for students to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting. Students have a variety oto choose from, including craft-oriented activities, baking, hiking, community service, travel (but not international), sports, history, college tours, Hogwarts, and more. Even though there aren’t any international trips this year, there are some overnight intersessions, including a Disney trip, an NYC trip, and several hiking trips. Some intersessions stay on campus, while others go off campus for day trips. There really is something for everyone. As for COVID protocols, the only thing that’s standardized is that students and staff will have to follow the policies of wherever they’re going. For some trips, that might mean students have to be fully vaccinated, others masked the whole time, and some might not have any. We guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Registration opens for seniors next week, then juniors the following week, and so on and so forth until everyone is registered. Intersession takes place during the last three days before April vacation, and students are required to participate in some sort of activity. Yay for forced family fun!
When fall sports are hanging on by a thread…
Now that the fall season is coming to an end it is time to discuss the overall success of the Bedford teams (the obvious exception being the boys soccer team) in the playoffs. Saturday was a very big day for football, cross country, and volleyball. The football team unfortunately suffered a devastating loss in the first round in double overtime to Exeter. But the bands were friendly and ended up playing a song together – yay sportsmanship! The cross country team had its meet of champions and champions they were – two of the girls ran wicked fast and will be moving on to New Englands. The girls soccer team played in the state championship game yesterday, but lost to BG 1-0. We guess they took a page out of the boys soccer team’s book. Volleyball, being the iconic team of queens they are, finished the season without any losses and secured the state championship. And now we fall into the depressing few weeks of no sports in between the winter and fall seasons…
When it’s time to roll up those sleeves again…
Brrring Brrring! Another COVID update coming your way. Last week the CDC voted to approve the Pfizer COVID vaccine for children ages 5-11. That’s a big leap: 28 million American citizens falling in that age group are now eligible. The dose will be a third of the size of the doses given to adults and teenagers, and has already been tested in over 3,000 children. There are already discussions of the school giving another clinic in a few months, in which students in this younger age group can receive their vaccine, and already vaccinated teens and staff can get their booster. Keeping those fingers crossed that this breakthrough will allow us to get even more back to normal!
