Just like Eminem was in 2018… We’re back!
This year’s first issue will update you on an upcoming election, some info about the incoming First Full Week of School, and some sports highlights.
The Story
You may have noticed that there are campaign signs allllll over town right now. That’s because it’s votin’ time baby!
What Election?
Just because there’s no presidential seats up for grabs doesn’t mean we can’t participate in Good Ol’ Fashion American Democracy (yeah yeah… that was almost a quadruple negative). There’s a few seats to fill this year, including State Rep. Elections are really important, so if you are eligible to vote, you gotta get out there!
When?
This year’s election is going to be held on Tuesday, September 13th (yes that means we have no school) in the Bedford High School Gymnasium. The last day to register will be September 7th (help can be found here if you need it). So even if you’re not old enough to vote, remind your parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, pet goldfish all to VOTE.
Who?
Governor Chris Sununu is up for reelection, as his two-year seat is expiring this year. A controversial politician, he excelled during the time of Covid, in managing the state in the most difficult time known to man. Since then, he hasn’t held strong to some of the policies he campaigned on, included abortion access, environment friendly infrastructure, and other important NH issues. The State Representative seat is also being turned over, as incumbent Catherine Rombeau runs again for reelection after a strong year in D.C. Wounded and weeping from his School Board loss in March, the one, the only, John Schneller has also decided to vie for that seat. Yikes, that would be quite the consolation prize.
What significance does this election have?
This is a little bit of a silly header, as all elections are vastly important in our country. Take for example this summer’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. The supreme court’s decision on this matter leaves the pro-choice/pro-restriction debate up to state legislatures- meaning who you vote for in this election could potentially affect your own life. Yes, you!
The Runaway
Starting off with *gasp* politics, to bring the heat for the school year!
What to say…
When you zoned out last week…
The first week, or rather two days, of school are done and over with so with that we bring you a semi-comprehensive report of how it went (we promise no stories about twins at the bus stop). For starters, all four grades attended the first of many assemblies highlighting back-to-school rules and norms. BHS is making a strong *strict* comeback from the past few COVID-affected school years by cracking down on phone policies, alarm and camera-equipped doors, as well as the dress code. With a tentative “dress code committee” in the works, this year might see an increased number of students sent to administration for depictions of drugs, alcohol or anything that “inappropriately exposes the legs, chest, back, abdomen or midriff” (pg. 50 of the handbook). Whatever that means, it seems like it mostly only applies to one specific demographic… So students be safe and be smart and don’t get dress coded. Another thing everyone, especially seniors and a select 13 juniors, should be aware of is parking! Don’t we all love the 20 minutes it takes to get out of junior lot? The new parking system has been working pretty well so far but it’s heavily debated whether the traffic situation has been alleviated at all. What else is new? Oh, the freshman! This year BHS hosts an unusually confident class of freshmen who seem to know their way around the place. Will they be able to keep it up or are the upperclassmen ready to reassert their dominance? Lastly, with the almost heart-warming but truly distressing heat of the third-floor classrooms, we go back to a regular schedule today with our first full week of school.
When you want to join the Bully Busters…
As most students and parents already know, Mr. Jozokos sent out an email Saturday that covered two topics. The first topic: bullying. A ‘form’ has been sent out to all students in said email that requires signatures from the student, a parent, and Jozokos himself. By signing this Anti-Bullying agreement, the school will create a positive learning environment, while parents must talk to their children about bullying, plus their kids must advocate for themselves if bullying does occur. Secondly, all grades have a class meeting this week for Tech Announcements (who knows what that means, although it could be more phone limitations). Seniors and sophomores will have this meeting on Thursday while juniors and freshmen have this meeting on Friday (all meetings will be held during advisory).
When you’ve been practicing all summer…
With tryouts being over last week, the JV and varsity teams have been established, team captains have been elected, and practices and workouts have started. This past week, soccer has really put in the work. With a truly outstanding opening to the season in a match against Central last Friday, the boys’ JV soccer team…tied 3-3. Fear not, that same day in the doubleheader against Central, the Girls’ varsity soccer started their winning streak by scoring 5-0 and only a few hours later the Boys’ varsity team won 2-1 (I KNOW! WE ARE AS SHOCKED AS YOU GUYS ARE TO FIND OUT THAT THE BOYS SOCCER TEAM NOT ONLY SCORED A GOAL BUT WON THE GAME!!!!). It does look like the Boys’ varsity could really use some help from the Girls’ team if they want to dream of getting anywhere near the championship. Some games to look forward to this week are the Girls’ Varsity field hockey game against Pinkerton on the 29th and the Boys’ JV soccer game against Memorial on the 30th. Fingers crossed they can get the ball in the net enough times to win!
Things to Know
If you’re already tired…
This weekend is labor day, which means if you survive this week, you get three days off!
If it didn’t go the way you planned…
Today is the last day to add a class. The level change window closes on September 23rd.
