The Story
It’s time for a pre-playoffs sports rundown.
Crew
The crew team did exceptionally well in the NH state championship regatta yesterday, with most of their boats placing 1st-3rd. They have another Halloween themed race on October 30th. After all these wins, they won’t need costumes to scare the competition away.
Cross Country
The cross country team has a big qualifying meet coming up on October 30th. If they run wicked fast at that meet, they’ll get to compete at the state championship the following weekend, and then perhaps a meet with all of New England.
Field Hockey
Bedford’s field hockey team is absolutely crushing it with 15 wins and only 1 loss. They have a first round bye in the playoffs and it’s looking like they will have a pretty good shot at the finals no matter who they play.
Golf
In a shocking turn of events, the golf team has actually already played (and won!!) in the state championship. Who would’ve thought that the slowest game on the planet would’ve finished the season first? Regardless, they’re apparently pretty good, even without the boys soccer players.
Soccer
Speaking of soccer, the girls team is staying strong with a record of 12-1-1. They’re currently 4th in the standings, so it looks like they will probably make the playoffs. However, they play the number 1 and 2 teams this week, so we’ll see how that goes. Boys soccer is doing less well – they’ve still only won 3 games and their chances of making the playoffs are not looking bright.
Volleyball
The volleyball team remains not only undefeated, but they have also one every single set in all 15 matches they’ve played. They have three games left before playoffs, but they’re pretty much guaranteed for at least the first round at this point.
Football
Varsity football came up with an important victory over Exeter last Friday night after a nail-biting fourth quarter. With that win, they should be able to pull off a playoff spot, but they do need to win the next two games to lock it in.
Bass Fishing
Much to the dismay of all those bass fishing enthusiasts out there, we still got nothing.
The Runaway
Playoff season is quickly approaching, and most of our teams are in good shape.
What to Say…
When the wheels on the bus don’t go round…
We’ve got a major bus driver shortage. As the fall sports season begins to come to a close, the game schedule is hyping up. All season the school has struggled with bus drivers, with the field hockey team getting the short end of the stick. Many teams across the board are having to drive themselves to games and even practices. If the school cannot make accommodations for sports teams to have transportation, then they probably should’ve mentioned that during sign-ups – not in the middle of the season. Especially for underclassmen who don’t have licenses, it can be really difficult to find a way to make it to these events. Additionally, the referee shortage has exacerbated this conundrum, as games are consistently being moved around. Unfortunately, there’s no end in sight for this problem and we can blame it all on our favorite pandemic. Hopefully, fall teams will hang on for at least a few more weeks, and things will be sorted out for the winter season. Until then, buckle up, and drive yourself to your games.
When you’re feeling spirited…
This week is the first spirit week for the year! If you haven’t noticed the barrage t-shirt signs in the hallway, we’ll fill you in. The theme days for the week are (in order) Millennial Monday, Tourist Tuesday, Pink/Anything But A Backpack Wednesday, Mathletes/Athletes Thursday, and Class Colors Friday. Although the feedback from the masses has been generally positive, students and teachers alike have expressed their confusion about some of the choices – primarily Millennial Monday. We think that this was a more specific attempt at a “decades day”, but people are still unsure what to wear. Might be time to break out the bell bottoms you’ve been stashing for this specific occasion. In addition to the spirit week, there is a pep rally and dance on Friday the 22nd. The dance is scheduled to start at 8 following the football game. People are frustrated that both the pep rally and dance are outside again this year, being held in the stadium and courtyard respectively, but the fire department is still restricting group gatherings due to COVID. Despite the probable cold weather for the dance, you should be able to stay warm in the crowd of sweaty teenagers. Hooray!
When Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out…
As you may have noticed the past two weeks, our school is filthy. The “devious licks” damaging the bathrooms seems to have inspired more and more of a disregard for school spaces. Losing a janitor last month probably didn’t help either. Not a day goes by that we don’t pass by smushed food on our way to lunch, or a water spill in the halls. Mr. Jozokos even had to close the courtyard because of trash. Maybe we just aren’t used to being in school full time anymore after COVID, or maybe teenagers are just being teenagers. Please try to be at least a little mindful. High-school is hard enough without almost falling on your face each time you enter the Commons. Maybe some of those Sophomores that cleaned the courtyard can volunteer as janitors too…
