The Story
We’re bringing you everything you need to know about this spring sports season.
Tennis?
The boys and girls tennis teams have the first competition of the year today versus Winnecunnent. The boys play at home at the County Road courts, while the girls play away in Winnecunnent. We’ll see if the reigning champs can uphold their dominant status.
Baseball?
The varsity and JV baseball teams scrimmage Nashua North on Wednesday in Bedford. They have another scrimmage against Manchester Central later in the week, and their first actual game is next week. Like the sport of baseball, their season seems to be a game of Hurry Up And Wait.
Softball?
The varsity softball team plays in the Windham jamboree this weekend at the buttcrack of dawn. We hope they stop for coffee on the way to the tourney. Like baseball, they have their first real game early next week.
Lacrosse?
According to the athletic calendar, the girls lax team plays “Maine” this Saturday. Does that mean they’re playing the entire state of Maine? Who knows.. That will be their first competition of the season, followed by an away game in Salem next Monday. The boys do not play the ambiguous Maine; they play Salem at home on Monday as well.
Track and Field?
The track and field team has their first meet next Wednesday at Nashua North. Apparently there has been some drama within the department this year, with Mr. Woodhead sponsoring “Field and Track” shirts, specifically for the non-runners of the crew. We love to see the competitive spirit.
Crew?
Last but most certainly not least. The crew team has a whole slew of practices for the month of April and then a series of regattas in May. Their first race is against Hanover and Exeter on May 7th.
The Runaway
Bedford is looking strong on all athletic fronts going into this years’ spring season.
What to Say…
When you’re feeling footloose…
Listen up, upperclassmen! The biggest school dance of the year is just around the corner! Well, actually, it’s still almost two months away but we’re trying to be PROMpt. Prom is scheduled for May 21st, from 6-11 PM. Tickets go on sale this week, in Bulldog Corner. Juniors and Seniors have already been getting excited, and you can check out the BHS Prom Dresses instagram account to see some pics of our gorgeous gals and their dresses! The theme is Enchanted Forest, and the dance is located at the DoubleTree Hotel in Manchester as usual. This will be BHS’s first normal prom in two years, so make sure you get your tickets!
When you’re feeling informed…
For the beginning of quarter four, the community senate has been discussing many items that are aimed at improving the town of Bedford. First off, the senate wants more community members – adults and students – to be involved in the community senate meetings, which they will accomplish by putting out flyers and a slight change in the by-laws. The traffic cycle at BHS has been approved by the school board and will be worked on during the spring season. On the topic of cars, they also discussed the idea of numbering on-campus parking spots for the students – part of which includes being towed with no warning if you are not in the correct spot (apparently the three strikes you’re out is no longer fitting a fitting strategy). The senate mentioned potentially letting juniors leave during block three, as that could benefit students in many ways, but could also cause more traffic problems, so they may have an experimental trial period, but not until after further discussion in their next meeting. Lastly, there seems to still be vandalism in the bathrooms at school, and if it continues, the bathrooms will be shut down yet again, which everyone would like to avoid. Needless to say, this seems to be a pretty productive group.
When you’re feeling congested…
We know you just can’t get enough of the traffic pattern updates, so here’s some more. As we’ve previously mentioned, over April Break the traffic flow around the middle school and the high school campus will be reversed in hopes of alleviating traffic because boy…is there traffic! From parents lining up an hour before dismissal to buses getting off campus after half an hour of waiting in line, changes are needed and here are some of them: (1) There will be no more intersection between cars coming in and out of the school. Coming up the hill, the cars will go directly to the right moving counterclockwise around the building. (2) Parent pick up will be in the back by the north lot to try and get more cars off of Nashua and County Roads and (3) buses will be loading in front of Lurgio. This will hopefully make for a quicker exit for the buses and just an overall smoother flow to the traffic pattern. The superintendent hopes to clear up any confusion with electronic billboards set up around campus to warn parents about these upcoming changes. Just in case you’re still confused and remember your 8th grade Cardigan training on how to read a map, here’s a visual of what it’s going to look like. By May 2nd, the goal is to have a functioning, effective, traffic-less traffic flow around the school.
